Close enough to touch

'You once were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to Him because of what Jesus Christ has done for you with His blood' (Ephesians 2:13).

I remember many years ago in Russia the difficulty of making telephone calls. In 1994, I was in Siberia evangelising for three months. I was trying to telephone home, but it was so difficult; at the time, you had to go to the local post office to book a telephone call, and then wait hours for your reserved appointment with no guarantee the phone would even work! The time difference between where I was and England was ten hours. I would just manage to get through on the telephone and the money would run out, and the line would cut off. Then the whole process would start all over again; sometimes I would hear England but they couldn't hear me, or vice versa. Isn't it different today? We all have mobile phones. If you want to talk to me, and if I want to talk to you, we use a mobile phone. You can even download an APP to your phone and it will pinpoint where someone is geographically, and where they have been in the recent past!

It is exactly the same between us and Jesus; for so long it was like there was a distance, as if we were separated. But now Jesus is so close, so near, you can talk to Him at any time. You don't even need a mobile phone to reach Him; and it is cheaper to talk to Jesus than to talk to your friends. The Bible tells us Jesus is so close you could almost touch Him. You can talk to Him as a friend. He is closer than a brother. Somebody once said Jesus is closer than our hands and feet; what a wonderful way of describing Jesus; Jesus is closer to me than my hand.

You are never lost to Jesus; we might not be able to see Him because of the darkness surrounding us, but He knows exactly where we are. Psalm 139 describes how we can never flee God's presence: if we ascend into heaven, God is there; if we make our bed in hell, He is still there; if the morning winds take us to the farthest reaches of the oceans, even there, God's hand shall lead and hold us; and when you sleep and wake the following morning, God is still with you.

We all at times ask: 'Does God care? Does God understand?' I want in some way to encourage you; let me tell you how close Jesus is to you: just breathe in, Jesus is as close as the air that fills your lungs.

The hardest thing in your life and mine, when you are in the midst of a crisis, is to see Jesus.
