He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. (Deuteronomy 8:3)
Our life is in Christ, He is our source and provider: we live by the Words which proceed out of the mouth of God. Jesus said you must be born again; and just as with all new life, we must be fed; and our food is the Bread of Life, the very Word of God. Build your life on this Bread of Life. Consume it as a vital necessity. If you build your life on His Words, then when the storms come, and they do to everyone, you will still be standing, because your life is built on the rock (Matthew 7:24-27).
In John 6:35, Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life, whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.” To truly understand this statement, we must first realise that at this time, to possess bread was to possess life. We often think of bread as a side item, something we eat in addition to a meal. But bread was the main staple of early diets; it could mean the difference between life and death; without bread, they would have died from hunger. By equating Himself with bread, Jesus is saying He is the source and sustainer of life; we are reminded of this when we take communion: His body is the bread which we eat in remembrance of Him. This is why Jesus could instruct us not to worry about what we should eat or drink, or the clothes we wear - to have Christ is to have all that we need.
Jesus wants us to understand that He will take care of our needs, but our priority must be seeking first His Kingdom. We mustn’t allow earthly concerns and worries to choke the seed of the Word of God, rather, trust that He will take care of us in this life and the next (Luke 8:11-15).
He is the Bread of Life; just as He gave manna in the desert to the Israelities, He will supply our daily needs; this is why Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”
