Miracles are the evidence of the Power of God

Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the Gospel of God... and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead... For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. (Romans 1.1,4,16, NKJV.)

The evidence of God is in the power of the Gospel we preach. When the alcoholic and the murderer come to Christ, and when that miracle happens and his sin is forgiven – he is freed from the curse and the power of the devil and you see the power of God in his life. I’m an evangelist and I call people to repent. But for someone simply to come and repent and say, ‘Oh God, I’m a miserable sinner!’ is NOT a miracle. The miracle is when the curse and the power of the devil is broken – when the alcoholic, the criminal, the drug addict comes forward to repent, his body full of alcohol or drugs, but is REALLY changed and goes out as an evangelist, a witness and a testimony – that change is the evidence of God, like the burning bush!

God worked the miracle with Moses’ stick because Moses said, ‘They will not believe.’ Many people say to me, ‘I don’t know. How can I believe?’ But when God works miracles, the miracles are the evidence of God. To Moses, the first miracle was the burning tree, then the stick that became a snake. When I preach the Gospel, you are not going to see a burning tree or a snake, but every time you will see miracles of healing – broken bones, blind eyes, cripples healed – you see God!

God does not work miracles in my ministry just for the believers, He works miracles to demonstrate the evidence to the unbelievers. You know Him – the miracles are for those who do not yet know Him – to me this is the greatest miracle.

I think I have seen more miracles in my life, more of the Power of God, than perhaps any other living man. Our God answers prayer – and He works miracles. I have seen every kind of miracle you can imagine: people born blind – God opens their eyes; broken backs – mended; cancers – healed; cripples – get out of wheelchairs. I’ve seen miracles that are not healing: financial provision; my own miraculous release from prison, and many others besides. I know these miracles will happen when I pray; I don’t have any question about it. It’s no different from knowing that every morning the sun will get out of bed and show itself at my window. God works miracles every day – but it’s for us to believe that He can, and will in our lives.

60 years ago I had throat cancer. I prayed for three months for God to heal me – and I so believed I was healed, I went back to the doctors, but they said, ‘You are not healed, the cancer has grown so large, in three days we must operate and remove your vocal cord!’ I then had to learn how to pray – and within two days the miracle happened and the doctors were astounded – they said, ‘Someone has cut it out and left a scar! Who did it?’ – Jesus!
