Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. But since they could see the man who had been healed standing there with them, there was nothing they could say. So they ordered them to withdraw from the Sanhedrin and then conferred together. “What are we going to do with these men?” they asked. “Everyone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it. But to stop this thing from spreading any further among the people, we must warn them to speak no longer to anyone in this name.”
Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” (Acts 4)
However you would describe yourself as a Christian – Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, Fundamentalist, Charismatic or whatever – we all have to understand that God has given Jesus a Name above every other name, so high, that at the Name of Jesus, every knee shall bow, of things in Heaven and things in earth and things under the earth, yes, even in hell. The Name of Jesus is so central to our faith, to our ministry! ALL Power, ALL Authority is in HIS Name! We don’t pray to saints, they’re asleep in Christ, awaiting the bodily Resurrection. We don’t pray to Mary, she’s also waiting for the Resurrection like the rest of us, including my parents and my wife – all are still waiting for the Resurrection!
But Jesus is ALIVE IN HEAVEN now! Hebrews 7:25 says that HE, Jesus, is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God by Him, seeing HE EVER LIVES TO MAKE INTERCESSION FOR US! We pray direct through Jesus to the Father! Because Jesus Himself said, “Whatever you ask the Father in My Name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son!” John 14:13,14. We pray to the Father through Jesus! Because all Power and all Authority is in His Name. There is no other name. God has done this so that every tongue should confess Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the Father!
Acts 4 Summary:
Peter and John before the Sanhedrin:
Peter and John are arrested by the priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees because they were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus.
They are brought before the Sanhedrin the next day. The rulers, elders, and teachers of the law question them about their authority.
Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, boldly declares that they healed a man by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom the leaders crucified but God raised from the dead.
Peter asserts that salvation is found in no one else but Jesus.
Reaction of the Sanhedrin:
The Sanhedrin is astonished by Peter and John's courage and recognises that they had been with Jesus
Seeing the healed man standing with them, they cannot deny the miracle.
They command Peter and John to stop teaching in Jesus’ name, but Peter and John refuse, saying they must obey God rather than human authorities.
The Sanhedrin further threatens them but releases them because they cannot find a way to punish them without causing an uproar among the people.
Believers' Prayer:
After being released, Peter and John return to the other believers and report what happened.
The believers pray together, asking for boldness to continue to speak God’s word and for God to perform signs and wonders through the name of Jesus.
The place where they are meeting is shaken, and they are all filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking the word of God boldly.
The Believers Share Their Possessions:
The community of believers is united, sharing everything they have.
No one among them is needy because those who owned land or houses sold them and brought the money to the apostles, who distributed it to anyone in need.
Joseph, also called Barnabas, sells a field he owns and brings the money to the apostles.
This chapter emphasises the early Christians' boldness in preaching, their unity, and their commitment to sharing resources to support one another.
