Paul commands in Phil 1:28, “In nothing be terrified by your adversaries!” I have had to learn this over the years. However extreme the circumstances, I have such a sense of comfort, consolation, joy and peace in Christ. My confidence, my trust is in Him. I’ve been one year in a communist prison, faced cancer twice, had my business stolen from me. But never have I suffered fear! I believe my every extremity was allowed in order to fulfil a greater purpose.
“Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will perform it until the Day of Christ Jesus.” In this verse the Apostle Paul is referring to the Power of the Holy Spirit in us who believe. This is so important, because the more I study the life of Christ, the more I realise the influence and the Power of the Holy Spirit working in Him, in His life and ministry. Just as the disciples had to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit came, before they could begin their ministry, so Jesus Himself did not begin His powerful public ministry until after He had received the Holy Spirit! Matt 3.16-17; Mk 1.9-12; Luke 3.21. That same Holy Spirit who was in Christ should be in us! And the Holy Spirit who has begun working in us, will continue until the Day Christ returns! God has chosen you to build His house here on earth. No, it is not a physical building, this 'house' we build is to reveal God's Glory and Majesty to an unbelieving world. God says to King David in 1 Chronicles 28, 'Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.' This chapter highlights how amazing our relationship with God is, He calls us His sons and daughters
I draw comfort from the story of Elijah. There is a very strong message for us in 1 Kings 17.1, that when we are working for God, the source of our supply will never dry up. What I need, what I lack, will not stop the supply of the Anointing Oil of the Holy Spirit and the Bread of the Word of God in my life. The Word of God and the Anointing of the Holy Spirit will never fail me, even in a time of drought.
Faith has been the motivation behind my life! Right from the beginning I’ve wanted to please God. When I received the Holy Spirit aged 15, I knew 1 Corinthians 12 says there are nine gifts, and Paul says choose, covet the best gifts… I can pray in tongues ‘more than anybody’, I can prophesy. But the one gift I wanted more than any other was the gift of faith.
God so impressed Romans 12:1 on me when I was a teenager: ‘I beseech you to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.’ God is talking about normal service, nothing exceptional – for every believer – the norm. Today the churches are talking about being normal, taking care of yourself, not working too hard… But the challenge is ‘reasonable service’ – giving your whole life as a ‘living sacrifice’! Everything! God didn’t call me to be an ‘evangelist’ or a ‘preacher’ – He said He wanted ALL of me!
Looking back over more than 70 years of ministry, seeing the difficult times I’ve been through – God has never failed me! There have been ups and there have been downs in my life, but as the Bible said, "The Lord answered me!" Sometimes in our lives we need the patience to wait for the fulfilment of God’s Promises.
I want you to realise, whether you are in suffering, pain, or are facing death, that is only a looking forward to eternity; our resurrection into new life. Too many old people view their lives as behind them. No! Our lives are in front of us. I want you all to grasp this Power of the Resurrection, the Power of this Hope in Christ.
